The Making of Pizza 1-2-3

Sorry, but I couldn't resist that pun on "The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3". But this is the story of a Pizza, layout that is, inspired by Model Railroad Micro-Layouts as described in the book of the same name by the late Carl Arendt. In that book, Micro Layouts,  Carl presented a vast collection of over 100 tiny Model Railroad (MRR) layouts that stretched the boundaries of imagination for sheer creativity. I was hooked. So, based on some of the creative genius I found rampant in those pages, I offer my own attempt to measure up to the genius of these crafters.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you, Pizza, 1-2-3!

It all started with a simple 12" serving tray. There were two to a pack on the clearance rack of my local supermarket. I said to myself, "AHA! Just what I need for a pizza layout!" The rest, as they say, is history.

Here's how I cut a circle of black foam-core board to fit the exact diameter of the lip in the pan rim. The circle of paper in the center is the radial layout I made for the spacing of the ties to be transferred to the foam board. Note that I used an artists' white pencil for the markings. The white circle in the middle of the foam is the mark for the center-line (C/L) of the track.

The next step was to add 4 long, strong straight pins through holes drilled 90° apart along the pan's rim. Note that I didn't drill into the foam board itself, just the metal pan. Now it was a simple matter to pin the foam to the pan by inserting the pins through the holes into the foam board's edge.
